Two US soldiers killed in Heit
2005-07-12
Two US soldiers were killed on Sunday in the city of Heit in western Iraq, confirmed the Multi-National Force (MNF) on Monday. In a press release, the force said that the two Marines were killed during an exchange of fire between unknown gunmen and the US forces while executing military operations in Heit.

Meanwhile, the US and Iraqi forces arrested 13 insurgents on Sunday and Monday during combing operations in central Iraq. An MNF press release said that soldiers in the Task Force Liberty in the US Army arrested nine individuals suspected of preparing and planting explosives near Tikrit. It added that the arrest was made based on upon citizens' tips, noting that investigations and gunpowder tests on three suspects turned positive, as they were possessing ammunitions and materials used for preparing explosives. A joint Iraqi-US force also arrested four individuals suspected of preparing and planting explosives nearby Mansouriya in Diyala Province, northeast of Baghdad. The press release said that all detainees were transported to a coalition forces' base for interrogations.

Meanwhile, nine out of 12 Iraqi detainees suffocated on Monday after spending over 14 hours inside an Iraqi Police truck in western Baghdad. An Iraqi Police source, who requested anonymity, told reporters that the remaining three detainees who survived the incident were transported to hospital for treatment. The Iraqi Police arrested the suspects in a hospital while they were accompanying a comrade who has been shot during clashes between the Iraqi Police and a group of gunmen in the area of Ameriya in western Baghdad. According to the source, the detainees were crammed into the police truck from Sunday morning until Monday 1:00 a.m., which led to the death of nine detainees due to lack of air.
