Gunmen bound for Iraq seized in Syria
2005-07-12
BEIRUT, Lebanon, July 12 (UPI) -- Syrian security forces detained 11 suspected members of a terrorist group as they attempted to cross into Iraq, Saudi daily al-Sharq al-Awsat reported Tuesday. The paper said in the un-sourced report that the group's members belonged to several nationalities, including Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Libya and Tunisia, and they were arrested trying to enter Iraq. It said the suspects were chased in the desert area of Abu Shamat near the Iraqi-Syrian border, and they are all Muslim fundamentalists who planned to carry out terrorist attacks in Iraq.

#6  The latest is that apparently their EZ Pass was obscured by a garter hanging from the mirror, triggering the law enforcement response.

Remember to keep your windscreens clear.

#5  When the PLO was doing this to the Israelis and having a hard go at it, they turned on their Jordanian hosts. They did they same thing to their Lebanese hosts as well. How long before the light goes on with the Syrians, that once the terrorist figure its dead end to cross the border but possible to establish an Islamic State in Syria, its their turn.

#4  Occam's razor suggests that these individuals were first told by the Syrians, "Don't cross there, the Americans are set up on the other side to kill you." To which they responded, "Good, we will cross there so that we can fight them all the sooner!" (It's a common Asiatic thing.) At which point the Syrians put them under arrest because they were stupid to the point of embarassing everybody.

#3  Maybe they've realized that it'a lost cause in Iraq, and are just saving thier lives for the future elsewhere, by sending them home.

#2  "Syrian security forces detained 11 suspected members of a terrorist group"

The other 300 men with them claimed to be members of a gay Arab tour group and were allowed to go on their way.

#1  Been a awfull lot of these stories around lately I wonder if now since Iraq is coming under control the Iraqi military is taking over from the US while the US troops run continuous offensive raids in the west and conquer sequere then place Iraqi forces to hold the territories while the Iraqi gov leaders have been demanding US move acroos the border into Syria proper to destroy the terrorist bases and form a buffer zone. I wonder if old Asaad has finaly woke up and realized the US troops are a lot more scary and dangerous than the terrorist. Then again this all could be BS show just to help in the PR game to prevent a US push into Syria.
