Italy bans U.S. security guards from Winter Games |
2005-07-15 |
Italy will not allow the United States or any other country to bring its own security personnel to guard athletes during next February's Winter Olympics, the government official in charge of the Games said on Thursday. "Italy is perfectly able to guarantee security," Mario Pescante, Undersecretary and Extraordinary Commissioner for the Turin Olympics, told a news conference. "I exclude categorically that the U.S. team or any other team will be able to bring people for their own security..." Why do I suspect that several teams will suddenly triple the size of their "training staff", and recieve "diplomatic pouches" in big steel boxes from their embassies? |

#6 I can see Italy's problem. Where do you draw the line? If you let the U.S. come armed, how about the U.K.? Turkey? Iraq? Iran? Pakistan? Better that everyone check their weapons at the door. |

#5 fine - Italy is held totally responsible for the safety of our athletes and staff . They just added 45,000 needed agents on THEIR budget |

#4 So an extra assualt carrier parks near Northern Italy and Aviano gets an expanded "security force" following a "terrorist threat". Seriously,I doubt even Islamic terrorists are stupid enough to attack the Olympics. Maybe Rome or somewhere else during them, but not the Olympics. |
