Re-poll ordered at 7 polling stations in Nowshera, Swabi |
2005-08-25 |
Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar, acting chief election commissioner (CEC), has declared polling null and void at seven polling stations in Nowshera and Swabi districts where women were not allowed to vote on August 18. Justice Dogar also instructed the Nowshera and Swabi DPOs to take legal action against the people who stopped women from voting. Fresh polling has been ordered at polling stations 5, 6 and 7 in Jehangira UC, Nowshera; polling stations 1, 2 and 4 in Pir Piai UC, Nowshera; and one polling station in Pabini, Swabi. The poll dates will be notified separately. EC Secretary Kanwar Dilshad said data from the August 18 polls proved that women were restricted from voting. âWomen also demonstrated against this in Islamabad. That was why the CEC took this decision.â Geo News reported that nazim candidates in Batagram had agreed to women voting in the polls today. At least 15 candidates called the Batagram DCO and promised to ignore a jirga decision not to allow women to vote. |
