Fidel Denounces Human Trafficking
2005-08-27
Not what you think it is... crappy translation as usual by me.
President Fidel Castro denounced the existence of a network for the illegal traffic of persons across the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, with the destination for Cubans being the United States.
I was fooled for a second there. Gee, I thought he was coming out against sex slavery.
"The organization trafficking persons from Cuba to Mexico is primarily under the control of radical Cubans in the state of Quintana Roo, who posess suitable means in order to move these emmigrants." From Mexico the Cubans are transported to the United States by air with a false passport or by the border crossing points, in some cases obtaining automatic residence thanks to the Cuban Adjustment Act.
Lately it seems that Fidel and his sidekick Hugo have adapted to the ol' Tranzi Newspeak pretty damn well. Castro's an old guy. He's been speaking Bolshevik for over 50 years. Old guys don't pick up new languages that fast. Hugo is clever, in a "peasant pulling one over on the squire" sort of way, but he's not bright enough to suddenly start sounding like a Spanish-speaking version of Duncan Black. So is it a miracle? An authoritarian gift of tongues? "I swear he's speaking anarchist!" "No. Can't you hear? He's speaking anti-globalism." Or do our friends at MoveOn (and their allies) have other clients besides Cindy Sheehan? It's pure speculation at this point, but my befuddled mind is having a hard time coming up with better theories.
