Jaish al-Taifa al-Mansoura claims mortar attack that prompted stampede |
2005-09-01 |
An armed Sunni group linked to Al-Qaeda claimed a mortar attack close to a Shiite shrine in Baghdad that was followed by a stampede which killed more than 800 people, according to an internet statement. 'The mujahedeen of the Jaiech Al-Taifa al-Mansoura (Army of the Victorious Community) fired mortars and Katyusha rockets at the bastion of the infidels and apostates ... to punish the genocides committed against Sunnis,' it said. It was not possible to verify the authenticity of the statement. The group has in the past claimed several attacks against US forces, Iraqi police and Iraqi Shiites. The deadly stampede occurred after the Kadhimiya mosque came under mortar fire, leaving at least seven people dead and dozens wounded, as pilgrims massed for a ceremony commemorating the death of Imam Mussa Kazim. |

#2 Truth matters very little to these folks who really want something, by their own standards, to feel proud about. Not every day you can claim to have helped murder over 800 people gathered to worship. Something to write home to Mom in Saudi Arabia about. |

#1 The only problem with this was the two separate interviews of different Shi'a eyewitnesses by different news orgs (Fox & CNN) I saw. They both said it was someone screaming there was a car bomb on or approaching the bridge which started the panic. Yet another lame Lions of Islam™ BS claim. Beyond pathetic. |
