| Al-Qaeda wannabes gloat over Katrina destruction |

| A forum used by al-Qaeda sympathisers has dedicated a page to Hurricane Katrina in which it welcomes the natural disaster as a "divine sign against the corrupt crusading America". The page opens with a quotation from the Koran about "punishment from above" referring to the hurricane which has caused hundreds of deaths and widespread devastation in jazz capital New Orleans and in other areas of the Southern US. "What we have seen in these days," the site recalls, "is nothing if not a sign from Allah that must push us to be more faithful to him. It is a warning and America with its force and technology can do nothing but stop and resign itself in the face of the power of Allah who guides humanity as he sees fit" "In these hours, the American crusader forces are flying over the southern coasts of the country to try to save those lost and there are many dead who have still not been counted. The tragedy is so grave that the American authorities have not yet revealed the truth on the extent of hurrican Katrina," it read. To back up their claims, the jihadi sympathisers quote verses 16 and 17 of the Al-Isra chapter. "When we decide to destroy a population, we (first) send a definite order to those among them who are given the good things of this life and yet transgress; so that the word is proved true against them: then (it is) we destroy them utterly". The site also publishes 50 photos which, according to the extremist site, symbolise the destructive force of the hurricane and the enormity of the tragedy that has struck the US. There are scores of replies from sympathisers in the forum section; many of them praise the destructive force of Katrina, and others underline that it is much more significant that the impact of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. |

| #11 Note that this is the kind of thing Muslims say about other Muslims: Speaking to Khabrain magazine, Dr Israr Ahmad said that the Arabs were the most incompetent people as a punishment of which Greater Israel will annex their land. All of Iraq will fall to Israel, as will Jordan and Lebanon. The fertile delta of Egypt will also be taken, as will be Saudi Arabia’s Hijaz, except Madina which Allah will protect. Southern Turkey too will be annexed. After that Imam Mehdi will appear. It's not so much gloating as a statement of "this is just the way it is". Allah reigns supreme, and when mere mortals - Muslims or not - screw up, Allah smites them and makes them pay the price. |

| #9 TW: That's the problem with thinking that everything that happens is the will of the god -- all is punishment, and thus must be accepted unquestioningly by the pious. Nuts! But that is the definition of piety. The Muslim God, like the Christian one, is not your personal friend. He is a jealous and vengeful God. Muslims can expect to get a chance at Paradise - non-Muslims are going straight to Hell. Someone who believes this is a Muslim - anyone who doesn't probably isn't one, any more than a communist who doesn't believe in the labor theory of value can really justifiably call himself a communist. |

| #6 So this means the Coalition is acting as the Hand of Allah to smite the impious in Iraq, and those who fight against the Coalition are defying Allah's will, sending themselves straight to Hell. | #5 I think this is a fairly innocuous event, and doesn't necessarily represent gloating, as much as reflection on what the deity requires to keep his wrath in check. Muslims believe in a vengeful God who acts to smite the faithless, the unbelievers and the apostates alike, and it is natural for them to draw links between natural disasters and one or all of these categories of sinners. |

| #4 PM: No, when bad things happen to infidels it is because Allah is punishing them for being infidels. When bad things happen to Muslims it is because Allah is punishing them for not being good Muslims. This is a fairly standard type of sermon for traditional Christian congregations - the boilerplate message is that pagan unbelievers and wayward Christians alike should expect to feel the wrath of the Lord. The difference with Muslims is that a tiny minority take it upon themselves to inflict the wrath of Allah upon infidels and wayward Muslims alike, while being applauded and financed by a significant percentage of other Muslims. |
