Death Message by 7/7 Bomber Stirs Strong UK Reaction
2005-09-03
Politicians, Muslim community leaders and relatives of victims yesterday strongly reacted to a videotape of Mohammad Sidique Khan, the ringleader of the men responsible for the suicide bombings on July 7 on the London transport system which claimed the lives of 56 innocent people, for trying to justify the devastating attacks. In a chilling video message broadcast for the first time on Thursday night by Al-Jazeera Television, the 30-year-old Khan from Dewsbury in West Yorkshire, blamed the British public for the bombings because of its support for Prime Minister Tony Blair’s government and other Western governments which “continuously perpetuate atrocities” against the Islamic world. This he said made them “directly responsible”.

Khan’s uncompromising and unapologetic address, and the fact that his message was accompanied by one from Al-Qaeda’s Number 2 Ayman Al-Zawahiri, has sent intelligence services and counter-terrorism experts scurrying for clues and hidden messages. “We are at war and I am a soldier,” he said and warned of further attacks.

British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said there could be “no excuse, no justification” for the terror ideology.

From bereaved families of the victims to Muslim community leaders, the message was to the point and unequivocal. This was an act of barbarity and nothing to do with Islam. Khan’s Member of Parliament (for Dewsbury), Labour MP Shahid Malik, said he was “shocked and disturbed” by the video. “Khan accuses ‘Westerners’ of being responsible for the London bombings but we must be clear that the only people responsible for these heinous acts were him and his twisted associates. Far too many Muslims have been living in a state of denial but now they have heard it from the horse’s mouth and must come to terms with the undoubted challenge that this presents. We must not allow the evil few to hijack issues such as Palestine or Kashmir or Iraq,” he warned.

Another Labour Muslim MP (for Tooting in south London) Sadiq Khan, described the video as “despicable”. The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB), who has come under attack for failing mainstream Islam in Britain, said it was “obscene” to suggest justice for the people of Iraq could be obtained by committing an act of injustice against the people of London. Inayat Bunglawala, spokesperson of the MCB stressed that “holding all British people responsible for the Iraq war is just plain wrong .” However, in a swipe at Prime Minister Tony Blair, the MCB reminded that “this tape does serve to confirm that the war in Iraq and our policies in the Middle East have indeed led to a radicalization amongst a section of Muslim youth.”

#7  When I tried to post a comment on the BBC site congratulating them for their documentary "A Question of Leadership", my comment failed to appear. Instead, there was much seething about blasphemy and the Zionist agenda of the BBC.

They keep saying that. It doesn't seem to make any difference -- or to acknowledge the rhetoric of the terrorists themselves.

Or the support the terrs get from the Muslim community.

#5  Captain I am sadly convinced that the comments the Beeb publishes and the stories they carry are what the consumers want in the UK and Europe. It sadily is representatve of the majoritys opinion and ignorance of the facts.

Where do they come up with comments like the UK and United States are gassing Muslims? That has to come right out of their butts/ It can't come from anyplace else. The Beeb us happy to spread it.

#4  Comments on the Beeb is a poor sampling, with a sampling error factor of 100 perc.

The good folks at the Beeb comb through the comments to publish only those that pass their inspection. Hell, their east of Cindy Shithen

#3  apparently, he really didn't mention much about iraq in his screed. instead, it was all about the "west" perpetrating atrocities (um, like darfur, I guess). So al-beeb's readers still don't get that this isn't about the war in iraq. it's about the war in eurabia.

#2  A large fraction of the comments on the Beeb website seemed to be along the lines of "didn't he realize that most of us are against the war in Iraq?" or words to that effect. The Michael Moore 9/11 meme is spreading. Many others stated that the war in Iraq is unjust, but the ends don't justify the means. Unfortunately, the ends do justify the means in Salafi moral philosophy, such that it is. You would think that at this point in the struggle, Joe and Jane Sixpack would be starting to grasp in some intuitive way what we're up against here. Maybe after the 4,563rd suicide bombing folks would wake up to the fact that maybe the guys in the turbans don't exactly stay up late at night pondering the Socratic dialogues or Christian parables. Well war is the great educator. They'll figure it out soon enough.

#1  Um, Tony? You keep saying you're going to boot some of your more pious holy men, but so far it's just talk. When do we see the cargo boxes lined up at Heathrow marked "Don't open 'til Xmas?"
