Pakistan not to extend NATO relief operation mission
2005-12-02
Pakistan Thursday denied permit to extend the quake mission of NATO troops beyond 90-days, ending in February. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tasnim Aslam said, though no exact date for the withdrawal of NATO troops has been set but Islamabad is not seeking any extension of it. She said that Islamabad will stick to its plans. The Foreign Secretary Riaz Mohammad Khan met with NATO Ambassador Mr. Carsten Fausboll and assured him of Pakistans cooperation to facilitate to carryout the withdrawal. The Foreign Secretary conveyed to the Ambassador that the relief assistance provided by NATO through its relief operation in Pakistan, and also its air and sea lifts of humanitarian assistance, have been highly appreciated by the people and the Government of Pakistan.

#2  Can't have a bunch of infidels running around loose in the country side. No telling what they might trip over or who they might run into.

#1  Not to mention opposition by the feudal landlords.

The landlords may be behind the recently promulgated fatwa banning victims from coming down the mountains into relief camps. It seems the feudal landlords are afraid that their serf-tenants will not return from the Punjab.

Another interesting bit of info. One US geologist blamed the disparity in death tolls on the pak and Indian sides of the LOC as partly due to ethnic migration. Pakistan has settled Kashmir with migrants from the Punjab, Balochistan and Pathan areas, vastly increasing the population (over a major seismic fault) of its part of Kashmir relative to the Indian side (which actually bans non-ethnic Kashmiris from settling in the state).
