| Terrorists intent on spreading their message of hate through the Internet bought a website from a Winnipeg-based Internet hosting service earlier this fall. The speed and ease with which the al-Qaida terrorist group was able to purchase the site and begin transmitting its propaganda is a âtroublingâ indicator of the uncontrollable nature of the Internet, a local terrorism expert said. âIt boggles the mind,ââ said University of Manitoba professor Peter St. John. âIt is being used in a very insidious way and there is little anyone can do to control it.â For a few weeks in October, a website sharing information about al-Qaida was distributed by a Winnipeg-based hosting service, Netgo Web Hosting. The owner of the company, who wished to remain anonymous, said he became aware of the site, which included downloadable videos of speeches made by Osama Bin Laden, when he reviewed some of the sites his company was hosting. âWhen I saw it and saw that it was in Arabic, alarms bells went off,â he said. âI forwarded it to the legal department of the company which operates the server and they told me to terminate it.â |
