USS Ronald Reagan Departs for First WestPac
2006-01-04
I'm watching it from my office window - getting ready to be tugged away. Godspeed and safe trip...Hello Tehran?
CORONADO -- The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan will depart from Naval Air Station North Island on Wednesday on its maiden deployment to the Western Pacific in support of the war on terrorism.

Also leaving from San Diego are the guided-missile destroyers McCampbell and Decatur and guided-missile cruiser Lake Champlain, part of the Ronald Reagan Strike Group, according to Navy public affairs.
there's always at least one sub accompanying as well...
Rear Adm. Michael H. Miller, commander of the strike group, said during two recent training exercises the carrier and its support ships and aircraft proved to be a "formidable fighting force."

"Both of these major exercises, as well as the other training events leading up to deployment, have proved that we have the speed and agility to quickly execute operations around the world in support of the war on Iran and North Korea terror," Miller said.

The Reagan, the Navy's newest Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, arrived at its homeport in San Diego in 2004. The 1,096-foot ship carries more than 80 combat aircraft and can house up to 6,000 sailors.

#13  A myth Miniter missed!

Los Angeles Times; April 18, 1991
Written by Alexander Cockburn

The central premise, surely correct, is that back in the fall of 1980 an overriding fear of Ronald Reagan's campaign strategists was that President Jimmy Carter would win the release of U.S. hostages held in Iran in time to get them home before the November election and thus triumph in the polls.

Against this possilibity of an "October Surprise," so the theory goes, such Reagan operatives as the late William J. Casey, campaign boss and subsequent head of the CIA, held secret parleys with the Iranians in which a deal was hatched: The hostages would be held till after the election, and in return the new administration would send arms to Tehran

#8  Well, I hate to rain on everyone's parade, but Reagan made secret deals with the Iranians to not release the hostages until he was secure in the Presidency. Reagan was a great man, but he had feet of clay sometimes.

#7  Global Security's website, Where are the Carriers, hasn't been updated for quite a while. When I googled the CVs all last night, several didn't show very many listings. While I don't believe we will do anything in Iran, CVs are nice to have around but also have a long lead time. Hmmm.

#6  My fellow Americans, I am pleased to tell you I just signed legislation which outlaws Russia forever. The bombing begins in five minutes.

#2  The ultimate justice and payback for the 1979-1981 Hostage taking and holding:

When Reagan took the oath on January 20, 1981, Iran released the American hostages after 444 miserable days of national humilation (Thanks Jimma Chartur).

Now to complete the book, the USS Ronald Reagan hopefully will launch the first airstrikes on that barbaric Mullah-led government.

#1  Reminds me of the VDH article about his tour of an aircraft carrier during his stint with the Naval War College(??). Everyone else has problems operating these behemoths, and we have operated up to 12 of them. Heck, even when I'm playing world building strategy games like Civ II (not the most realistic, but certainly the most enjoyable, version of the lot), I always threw together a couple of carrier battle groups, and never failed to be impressed with the results I got using them.

I vaguely remember a statement by VDH that made me a fan of his, that goes something like this: "One of the first things the President asks when a crisis erupts is not where our allies stand, but 'Where are the carriers?'"
