2006-01-10 | |
ATHENS: A powerful earthquake shook Greece on Sunday and was felt as far away as the Middle East. Minor damage was reported in southern Greece, and authorities on the island of Crete said three people were slightly injured. The Athens Geodynamic Institute (AGI), which initially gave the quake a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter Scale, later increased their estimate to 6.9 and said the epicenter was located beneath the seabed about 20 kilometers east of the island of Kithira. "It was a very powerful quake which shook all of Greece. There have been dozens of aftershocks, four with a magnitude of 5," said AGI head Giorgos Stavrakakis. The earthquake occurred at 11:34 GMT and was felt as far away as Cairo and Amman.

#4 Nobody died. Just a few people wounded. The epicenter was undersea, far from populated areas, and even further from densely populated ones I gather. |

#2 Fred, can't be that bad....since there is no mention of the quake in the first place on the Beeb's website, or the NY Slimes' one either. Hope everyone is all right in the affected area. |
