Thousands of people peacefully protested across the country on Friday against the publication of cartoons of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) in European newspapers. The protest call was issued by the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA). Public gatherings were arranged after Friday prayers at Karachi Company, Tench Bata and Bakra Mandi in Islamabad, while a protest was held at Liaquat Bagh in Rawalpindi. MMA Secretary General Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidry of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam led the protests.A joint protest was carried out by the MMA and the Tahafuz Namoos-e-Risalat Mahaz in Lahore. Demonstrations were held at Lawrence Road and the Lahore Press Club. MMA President Qazi Hussain Ahmed was detained in the JI headquarters at Mansoora and was not allowed to participate in the protest.
