UN examines MPs' claims they were pressured |
2006-02-26 |
Terje Roed-Larsen, the UN special envoy for the implementation of Security Council Resolution 1559, said the UN is examining a petition signed by former and present MPs who claimed they were pressured to support the 2004 extension of President Emile Lahoud's mandate. Larsen said UN Secretary General Kofi Annan had informed the Security Council that there was a general feeling in Lebanon that "the election (of Lahoud) was implemented with the direct interference of Syria." He stressed that "this is a Lebanese issue that should be solved in Beirut through the existing democratic institutions." |
