HYDERABAD: Police shot and killed nine Maoist rebels, including six women, when the guerrillas attacked a patrol in southern India, officials said on Friday. Police said it was the largest number of Maoist rebels killed in a single incident this year and said the dead may include some senior Maoist leaders. The gun-battle took place in the forests of Kadapa district, 500 kilometers southeast of Hyderabad, the capital of Andhra Pradesh state. "In the ensuing exchange of fire, which lasted an hour, nine Maoists were killed on the spot, while others managed to escape," senior police official Y Nagi Reddy said. |
