DAMASCUS - Syrian writer Mohammed Ghanem has been sentenced to six months in jail by a military court for having offended President Bashar al-Assad, a human rights group said on Wednesday.The Syrian National Human Rights Organisation said Ghanem was convicted on Tuesday by a court in the central town of Raqqa. He was found guilty of “offending the president of the republic, damaging the image of the state and incitement to confessional dissent”, the group’s president, Ammar Qorabi, said in a statement.
Ghanem was arrested on March 31 at his home after he published articles on the Internet critical of the domestic situation in Syria.
