Pak nuke warheads were 'deployed' during Kargil war
2006-07-04
Lahore: Former Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif has said that during the Kargil war, General Pervez Musharraf had moved the Pakistani nuclear warheads without his approval to use them against India.

The former Pakistani prime minister, who now lives in exile in London, has made this revelation in his biography titled Ghadaar Kaun? Nawaz Sharif Ki Kahani, Unki Zubani (Who is the traitor? Nawaz Sharif's Story in His Own Words.)

The book, which is based on the personal and political life of Nawaz Sharif, has been written by senior Pakistani journalist Suhail Warraich and was released yesterday.

The former premier has revealed for the first time the details of his childhood, his political career, the Kargil issue, nuclear explosions, the October 1998 military takeover and his departure to Jeddah.

The 500-page book echoes the viewpoint of Sharif an important player in Pakistan's political history.

Sharif states in the book: "During my post-Kargil misadventure meeting with American President Clinton, I was told by the American leader that the nuclear warheads had been shifted from one station to the other during the Kargil War.

"I was taken aback by this revelation because I knew nothing about it.

"The American President further told me during the meeting that the nuclear warheads have been moved so that these could be used against India.

"I was asked by Mr Clinton as to why I was unaware of these developments despite being the elected chief executive and the prime minister of the country. It was a very irresponsible thing to do on General Musharraf's part."

Sharif has claimed in his first official biography that General Musharraf had waged the Kargil war against India without his approval and he only came to know of the misadventure through Indian Prime Minister Vajpayee who had provided him audio tapes of Musharraf's telephonic conversation to this affect.

#1  Nawaz Sharif should have known better than to expect that his permission was needed to deploy nuclear weapons.

Benazir Bhutto was denied permission to visit the Kahuta Uranium enrichment plant run by AQ Khan when she was Prime Minister of the country.
The Saudi Prince Sultan Bin Abdul Aziz was however given a grand tour (after all they probably paid for the place).

The Pakistan state doesn't have an army. It is the army that has a state. A true praetorian setup.
