Hezbollah Says No Leaders Killed in Bunker |
2006-07-20 |
Israeli warplanes dropped bombs late Wednesday on a bunker in south Beirut where senior Hezbollah leaders were thought to be, the military said. The guerrilla group said none of its top officials were killed. Israeli military officials said a wave of aircraft dropped 23 tons of explosives on the bunker. The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to reporters, said top Hezbollah figures were thought to be there, possibly including Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. The officials said the bunker was in the Bourj al-Barajneh section of southern Beirut. Hezbollah later denied that a leadership bunker was hit, saying the strike targeted a mosque that was under construction and no one was killed. The group issued a statement saying "no Hezbollah leaders or elements were killed in the strike." |

#22 I like the idea of the Hizballah board of directors trapped under 100' of dirt and rubble, surviving in the dark on the remains of their "comfort" goat and Zamzam cola... |

#19 23 tonnes of bombs may have made quite a rubble pile. If Nasrallah is in a deep bunker, he could be sealed up there for a while, assuming that he was not injured or mortally wounded by the shock waves. Also, rescuers may be a bit reluctant to start digging with the waves of bombing runs going on. This would be a good time for napalm and flame. If the fire does not get you, massive amounts of napalm would suck the oxygen away from the bunkers, suffocating the occupants. A friend of mine who flew P-38s in WW2 did this in Borneo. They were taking out oil infrastructure, but were receiving murderous fire from a nearby mountain. They bombed and bombed, but the Japanese retreated behind blast doors to their tunnels. Then they made a massive napalm bombing, setting the whole top of the mountain on fire. No more AA. A trip to the top of the mountain found hundreds of Japanese soldiers dead in their tunnels, all suffocated to death. |

#14 Ima waiting for video, Nas. None of this date-unknown audio sh*t. I think you're a blob of overpressured protoplasm in a concrete sarcophagus, wearing a disheveled black turban. |

#13 I see. Haven't seen the flick, so the ref was totally obscure to me. So, yes, it may be a pineapple. ;-) |

#10 You mean the round object in Ba'allah's hand? Sort of a globular cluster. Looks solid, but it is a hive composed of flies. He is, after all, The Lord of Flies. |

#9 Nasrallah to his Master: "You don't look like I imagined. Where's my virgins? By the way, what's the pineapple for?" |

#8 He may not have time for interviews, because he may be meeting his Master, Ba'allah |

#6 Whacking Nasrallah won't stop Hezbollah, but surely it will cause some level of internal disorganization and confusion... at this pivotal point in time, that just might be fatal to Hezb in Leb. Now we'll see if Syria & Iran are going to back up their statements about not allowing Hezb to be defeated. Some have speculated that they have to, politically. That should escalate this to include them openly militarily. Slooooooowly I turned, step by step, inch by inch... Fire up the barbecue, I'm thinking by this weekend we're gonna have us a real fight. |

#5 Having a mosque atop your bunker might sound like a good idea, given the known reluctance to attack such structures on the part of the West. Nice cover for entry and exit, too. |

#4 Fully nine hours after the strike, Nasrallah has yet to be heard from. Silence from a man who immediately phoned HizballahÂ’s al-Manar TV to confirm his survival after Israel launched a strike that destroyed his home and headquarters five days prior. Never one to shy from cameras or microphones, perhaps this vanity contributed to his apparent demise.
