Three killed in grenade attack in IndiaÂ’s Assam |
2006-08-15 |
GUWAHATI, India - Rebels hurled a grenade at a security patrol in India’s troubled northeastern state of Assam on Monday, killing three civilians, including a woman and a child, police said. Several others, including four policemen, were wounded in the attack by suspected militants of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), which came a day after the government suspended military operations against the group to help peace moves. The targeting of a police foot patrol in the town of Duliajan, about 500 km (310 miles) east of the state capital Dispur, came on the eve of India’s Independence Day, a time when rebels routinely launch attacks. ‘We are not sure who was behind the attack, but we have strong reasons to suspect that ULFA is behind it,’ a senior intelligence officer told Reuters in Guwahati, the state’s main city. |
