ZAMBOANGA CITY - Suspected Abu Sayyaf guerillas beheaded one of two kidnapped victims in Jolo island, where security forces were battling the terrorist group allied with the Indonesian Jemaah Islamiyah network, officials said. Officials said the severed head of Jeffrey Selvin, 27, was found by civilians in front of the police headquarters in downtown Jolo at around 6 a.m. Saturday. His body had not been recovered. In June suspected Abu Sayyaf gunmen freed kidnapped pharmacy owner Bren Vergara after more than two months in captivity. His family was said to have paid more than P1 million in ransom. The man was snatched on April 12 together with his ailing 70-year-old mother, Caridad Vergara, who had been freed earlier near Jolo. Officials said their guards tortured both hostages during their captivity in the mountain. The man was beaten so badly that he nearly died.
