PNG rejects Howard's security comments |
2006-08-25 |
Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister, Sir Michael Somare, has criticised Prime Minister John Howard for his comments on the security situation in the country. Sir Michael has told Mr Howard not to use Pacific island nations as the reason for expanding the Australian Army. Mr Howard said yesterday he was worried about an inherently unstable situation in PNG, as he announced a $10 billion boost to the Australian Army. The PNG leader issued a statement saying Mr Howard should be honest enough to tell Australian taxpayers that because of Australia's increased deployments in the Middle East, Afghanistan and East Timor, it was necessary to build up the army, and that PNG is certainly not the reason. |
