A large amount of frozen chicken and beef which did not carry the halal certification mark from the Brunei Islamic Religious Council, as well as pork were found kept in two freezers at a house in Jalan Kerma Negara in Kuala Belait. In the surprise inspection by the Halal Food Control Section Unit of the Syariah Department in Kuala Belait with the assistance of another unit from Bandar Seri Begawan at around 5pm yesterday, the officers found the pork, chicken and beef kept in one of two vehicles believed to be used by a food vendor - a female Muslim convert staying at the house.
The woman, aged 48, had been allegedly selling and supplying frozen meat to the public, especially at foreign workers quarters and work sites. The female suspect who is renting the house with her husband, children and her workers, also kept a quite a large quantity of goods listed as controlled items by the Customs Department. The goods included sugar and flour kept in the kitchen cabinet and various types of medicines kept in the bedroom and living room. A large quantity of empty tins, believed to have previously contained alcoholic drinks, was also found in a basket outside her house. |
