Bolton urges UN Council to react to N Korea threat
2006-10-04
U.S. Ambassador John Bolton urged the U.N. Security Council on Tuesday to respond to North Korea's threat to conduct a nuclear test, saying it would be a grave threat to international peace and security. "Obviously the ballistic missiles, if mated with nuclear weapons, would be a very grave threat to international peace and security," Bolton said shortly before consultations among the 15 council members. "Given the very strong action by the council in July condemning the North Korean ballistic missile tests, I think it's important we're prepared to follow up here," Bolton said.

“North Korea's foreign ministry released a statement on Tuesday saying Pyongyang would conduct its first-ever nuclear test, blaming a United States' "threat of nuclear war and sanctions" for forcing its hand.”
North Korea's foreign ministry released a statement on Tuesday saying Pyongyang would conduct its first-ever nuclear test, blaming a United States' "threat of nuclear war and sanctions" for forcing its hand. The Security Council adopted a resolution to impose weapons-related sanctions on North Korea in response to its flurry of missile tests in July. That resolution demands that North Korea suspend "all activities" on its ballistic missile programs and bans imports from or exports to North Korea of missile-related items. Bolton said the council could consider what "preventive diplomacy" it could take to stop the North Koreans from conducting a test of a nuclear device."

"I don't know what the rationale in Pyongyang is, but I think it is a test of the Security Council. I think it's a test of how the council responds," Bolton said.

#6  I recall reading somewhile that we (USA) were preparing a huge underground non-nuclear explosion of the same magnatude as a small nuke.

It occurs to me that the NORKS have plenty of conventional explosives, and a huge burning desire to be taken for a Nuclear Power, so.....

#4  Somehow I expect the reaction given and the reaction Darth expects will not even be close much less in the same time zone: look for continued dithering with scattered apathy. A chance of reserved surprise of the Norks actually figger out how to hook the blue (or is it red?) wire to the battery......

#3  I'm sure the Earth Net of seismic detectors are 'clicking away' waiting for the big NORK Booomm! I just wonder if they'll go for the dramatic and explode the thing above ground like the US did in the 50s; what flare and excitement!! But they have to make sure the winds are out of the west first!

#2  Let them make at least one underground test - it will take care of some of the tunnels.

#1  I bet the UN heeds the call and swings into inaction
