#1 The shops with their weird collections of goods and steel roll-down doors, the weathered faces, the dusty dry backgrounds with evidence of human interference slowly dissolving back to sand, the facial expressions ranging from wary to weary to childlike exuberance, the sheer starkness - a completely mesmerizing memory trip, especially of my first tour in '92 in S.A. when I was in "tourist" mode and visited everything from Khafji to the outer villages of Bahrain, Qatar, and the UAE.
