| Hit the link for a good roundup of what's happening in Oxaca now. StrategyPage pointed out several weeks ago that the Oaxaca protestors thought the Mexican government was about to respond with force (and as I recall one of the sources for that StrategyPage October 6 post was an email from a Mexican who had been in the area– there was also a Reuters report). The presidential election prevented Fox from taking action against the protestors barricades and the subsequent ”hung election”, with its extended unrest, also restricted him. (For example, see the StrategyPage post of September 24, which is down the page from the October 6 post on the link above.) Now Calderon’s narrow victory has been ratified and Lopez Obrador’s Mexico City protests are subsiding. Friday’s murders up the ante. It appears Fox doesn’t want Calderon to begin his term with the Oaxaca problem unresolved. The next three days will be critical. I note in the Reuters report says the local teachers have agreed to go back to work on Monday. That’s a thin slat of daylight– a nod toward a negotiated settlement rather than a war in the streets of Oaxaca. Stay tuned. |
