The fighting started during an ambush of a joint Iraqi and U.S. patrol. It is unclear how many AIF were in the area at the time of the ambush, but estimates put the number between 25-30.
After contact, AIF dispersed in several directions. One group of vehicles was tracked and attacked by Coalition attack helicopters, while another group fled to a compound outside the town. This group was heavily armed with machine guns, rocket propelled grenades and a large stockpile of ammunition. Coalition Force attack helicopters, ground troops and close air support aircraft engaged the enemy, destroying their vehicles and hiding positions with precision fires, killing eight, capturing 14 and neutralizing various weapons and munitions. Coalition forces sustained one member killed and three others wounded in action.
Iraqi Security and Coalition Forces continue to exploit the area for further intelligence in order to bring peace and stability to the region.
