 FOUR insurgents have been killed and 48 arrested in a raid on a suspected al-Qaeda hideout in the restive western Iraqi city of Ramadi, the US military has said. The raid took place yesterday afternoon in Ramadi, the largest city in the western province of Al-Anbar and one of the fiercest sites of fighting between insurgents and US forces. "This area is known to be frequented by foreign fighters, and an al-Qaeda senior leader has launched suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices at coalition and Iraqi checkpoints in the past," the US military said. Iraqi state television has reported that senior al-Qaeda leader and bomb-maker Sayyaf Habib Mawla was captured in the raid. |
