India holds 10 suspected Dawood gang members
2006-11-22
MUMBAI: Indian police arrested 10 people deported from Dubai on Tuesday, accusing them of being part of a crime syndicate involved in kidnapping, extortion and murder. Police said those arrested belonged to the gang of Dawood Ibrahim, a fugitive mob boss believed to be based in Pakistan and who is accused of masterminding the 1993 Mumbai bombings that killed 257 people.

Ibrahim and his top associates never faced trial having fled the country soon after those blasts. The verdict in the case is currently being delivered by an anti-terrorism court in Mumbai. “They (the arrested) are involved in various crimes and we are seeing who is involved in what,” Mumbai police chief AN Roy told Reuters. “These people were wanted by us. The Dubai police detained them some time back.” Police said they were also questioning the deported people to find out if they were involved in the deadly explosions 13 years ago, apparently ordered by Ibrahim to avenge the razing of a 16th century mosque by Hindu zealots.
