Muslims 'refuse anti-MRSA gel'
2006-12-30
Some Muslims are undermining the battle to rid BritainÂ’s hospitals of killer infections by refusing to wash their hands when visiting sick relatives. Dispensers containing anti-bacterial gel have been placed outside wards at hospitals all over Britain in a bid to get rid of superbugs like MRSA and PVL. It prevents people bringing in more infections. But some Muslims refuse to use the hand cleansers on religious grounds because they contain alcohol. Health watchdogs are so concerned they intend to meet with NHS bosses in the New Year to try and hammer out a solution. NHS care assistant Theresa Poupa, 46, became aware of the situation while visiting a sick cousin at the London Chest Hospital in Bethnal Green.
That's George Galloway's district, naturally...
She said: “I could not believe it - the signs are large enough and clear enough but they just took no notice and walked straight onto the ward. I was there almost every day for three weeks and I saw it repeated dozens and dozens of times. When I raised the matter with the nursing staff they just shrugged and said that Muslims were refusing to use the gel because it contained alcohol. They said they couldn’t force visitors to use the gel and I understand that — but I was astonished that anyone who didn’t wash their hands was allowed onto a ward. I know the dangers that bugs like MRSA can cause. They kill hundreds of patients a year.”

Michael Summers, chairman of the Patients’ Association, said: “I have been made aware of this situation during discussions with nurses and it is a very serious state of affairs.” Sun doctor Dr Carol Cooper, who practises in West London and works shifts in accident and emergency, said: “I practise in an area where the patients are largely Bangladeshi and some of them do object to washing their hands because of the alcohol. But it’s fantastically important.” Murray Devine, head of safety at health watchdog the Healthcare Commission, said: “The solution should be ensuring Muslims have access to soap and water. There’s no substitute for good old fashioned soap and water.”

#11  The Phlebotomist just might deduce,
If a girl is demure from her juice,
Or if she's a tart,
She's dumb or she's smart,
But it helps if her tongue it is loose.

#9  As a former phlebomtomist, how do the muslims handle the alcohol swab prior to venipuncture? Do they insist on betadine or would they rather just have the needle stuck in without cleaning? I would make sure the needed tip had a burr on it before poking these pricks.

#8  I suspect this story, as hospitals are well aware that hand sanitizer is only recommended when there is no visible contamination; otherwise, you need to wash with soap and water.

For this reason, hospitals are full of hand washing basins, which are religiously inoffensive. It would not be inconvenient at all to ask them to wash their hands in the patient's bathroom. They also have large amounts of boric acid solution, which is a fine disinfectant, and about as toxic as ordinary salt.

N.B. Ordinary soap is just as good as disinfectant soap, in fact, perhaps better, as the standard disinfectant used in soap has lost effectiveness against many pathogenic bacteria. The difference in bacteria removal from the skin is about one-tenth of one percent difference.

#6  When I raised the matter with the nursing staff they just shrugged and said that Muslims were refusing to use the gel because it contained alcohol. What, that makes it okay?! As a nurse this just kills me, where are the 'top honchos' to back up the proper handwashing rules!
Let the choice be theirs to please the PC crowd;
If they don't wash their hands, they shouldn't be allowed in.
Very well said SPOD, it really is amazing that we're even having to debate this.

#4  This is dirt simple wash the hands with the goop or you can't come in. We are farked as a civilization if we let these thrid world backwards mentalities and allenist slaves take control of a public health issue because of some retarted PC type of reasoning.

#3  So they're not even allowed to TOUCH alcohol? I call bullshit on that one.

Beyond that, yeah, ban them. If they can't abide by sanitary regulations, they shouldn't be allowed in. If the PATIENTS pull the same crap, boot THEM out, too.

Ban people who refuse to disinfect their hands from hospitals. Problem solved.

The fact we are even debating this is a perfect demonstration of how fucking fucked we are.
