3 Afghan soldiers killed in blast
2007-01-18
An Afghan army vehicle struck a remote-controlled bomb in eastern Afghanistan on Wednesday, killing three soldiers and wounding four others, an official said.

The Afghan National Army vehicle struck the bomb in the province of Khost, which adjoins the border with Pakistan, army General Samiul Haq said. The general did not say who planted the bomb.

Meanwhile, the British Defence Ministry said on Wednesday that four British soldiers in Afghanistan strapped themselves to the wings of Apache attack helicopters to rescue body of a comrade shot dead by the Taliban. UK Task Force spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Rory Bruce said Royal Marine Lance Corporal Matthew Ford, 30, was shot dead on Monday when more than 200 British troops attacked the TalibanÂ’s Jugroom Fort in southern Helmand province.

When Ford was discovered to be missing, the Marines first planned a rescue attempt with armoured personnel carriers, but when the Apaches became available they decided the fast attack helicopters provided the best opportunity to rescue him.
