3rd anti-corruption official resigns in Bangladesh
2007-02-12
BangladeshÂ’s third and last anti-corruption commissioner stepped down Sunday, an official said, after the arrest of dozens of politicians accused of graft. The three-member commission, which was formed in late 2004, reportedly came under pressure from the interim government for allegedly failing to pursue graft during Prime Minister Khaleda ZiaÂ’s tenure, which expired in October 2006. Maniruddin Ahmed quit days after two other colleagues resigned, commission secretary Golam Sharier told reporters.

Army troops using special emergency powers have launched a nationwide crackdown against allegedly corrupt politicians. Over the past few weeks, they arrested about 60 politicians, including 12 former ministers. Most of the detainees belong to the countryÂ’s two major political parties - the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and the Awami League.
