Iran builds new naval destroyer production line
2007-02-23
Iran on Thursday launched a naval destroyer production line in a factory at the Anzali port in the northern part of the country. The Islamic Iranian News Agency (IRNA) said the Minister of Defense General Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar attended the ceremonial inauguration of the plant. The destroyer wieghs 1.4 tons and powered by a 20,000 horse-power engine with a 30 knots speed capability. The destroyer is equipped with surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, anti-air defenses and sophisticated electronic war systems, IRNA noted.
I'll leave it to the squids-n-swabbies to tell us if we should be askeered..
Found a better copy:

TEHRAN, Feb. 23 (ISNA)-The Wave II, destroyer production line was inaugurated through the presence of Iran's defense minister. This 1420 ton destroyer possesses 2000hps and can speed up to 30 knots. The "Wave II" has the ability to carry helicopters, various surface to surface and surface to air missiles, modern canons and anti air canons. This ship is also equipped with torpedoes and electronic warfare devices.

#30  WAFF.com > Iran is building second MOWJI-class DD [Frigate?], SSM + SAM armed, at 1,420-tons, + Helo.

#29  So it is a patrol boat, not a destroyer.

Essentially. Somewhat longer-duration.

I s'pect the reasons it's being built in Anzali is that it's more conducive to prototype testing, and even if the ship is a half-assed success, it changes the naval balance in the Caspian region.

#28  The Indian Delhi class destroyers are 6900 tons and do 32+ knots.

Before the construction of the ADS aircraft carrier, this was the largest warship built in India.

#25  Mike, in addition the Fletchers (as well as all other WW2 era DDs) were capable of pulling that speed while firing 5x5" 38-caliber dual purpose guns and taking hits and surviving them from the same weaponry. Unlike post WW2 DDs up through about the mid-80s WW2 era DDs had this little thing called "armor" (armour for our European friends) and while they couldn;t take hits from BBs, they weren't designed to.

The Arleigh Burke's utilize a number of new design features that were learned from past mistakes (the USN at one point went from all steal construction to aluminum hulls and virtually no armor over vital areas - there are reports of an OH Perry, probably sold to Israel as I recall, that either suffered a missile hit or a mishap and burned to the waterline)) as follows,

Designed for survivability, the Burke class incorporates all-steel construction and many damage control features that are a direct result of lessons learned during the 1981 Falkland Islands War, and from the May 1987 accidental attack on the USS Stark (FFG 31)in the Persian Gulf. Two layers of steel and 70 tons of Kevlar armor protect the ship's vital areas. The design also incorporates anti-chemical/biological warfare double air-locked hatches, anti-contaminant interior pressurization, and reduced access to weather-decks. Fire-fighting measures include larger foam tanks with quicker access, salt-water sprinklers in the berthing areas, and fresh-water sprinklers in CIC areas.

The Arleigh Burke class destroyer is smaller, more stable, and faster than its predecessor--the Ticonderoga class Aegis cruiser. Its four gas turbines will drive it at a maximum speed of 31 knots, or give it a range of 4,400 nautical miles at 20 knots.

Displacement: 8,315 tons

Propulsion: 4 gas turbines,
100,000 Shaft Horsepower (SHP)

Armament: 1 61-cell and 1 20-cell Mk-41
vertical launch system

#24  How many camel skins did the hull take to make?

#23  They intend to annex Azerbaijan and then surrounding areas.

After the 12th Imam leads them to victory over the forces of the Crusaders and the Jews, no doubt. Still, it's a nice little project to engage the energies of their excess male population.

#22  30kts is fast, but not world-beating.

A WW2 Fletcher has a published top speed of 36 to 38 kts depending on which reference you look at; I think it was actually closer to the top end of that range. The French Le Fantasque lived up to its name, able to turn in a smokin' fast 42kts.

Among modern combatants, the Arleigh Burkes are officially rated at "30+" kts, and I'd guess the actual number to be in the high thirties. The Spruances could do 32kts, and the Oliver Hazard Perrys are officially rated at "29+" kts. The Russian "Krivak" class is said to be capable of 32kts.

Still, nothing a vulcan wouldn't make quick work out of.

#19  Old article I found:

Date: 12/03/2001
IRAN - NAVY PLANS TO TAKE DELIVERY OF NEW PATROL SHIPS (DEC 03/MENL)

MIDDLE EAST NEWSLINE -- Iranian Vice Adm. Moharram Maequl said that Iran will obtain the Mouj attack craft for patrol in territorial
waters in the Persian Gulf, Caspian Sea and Oman Sea, Middle East Newsline reports.

Maequl, addressing a Navy Day gathering, said that the ship would help ensure Iranian military superiority in the region, as well as its control over the Straits of Hormuz, the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Sea.

#18  I doubt if they will build a single destroyer at this site. I suspect it is a potemkin facility designed to justify do-almost-nothing contracts to Mullah Industries, Inc. with subcontracts to corrupt Azeri politicos.

#17  Sounds like the Iranians are getting concerned about their northern region.

They intend to annex Azerbaijan and then surrounding areas. This would give them some coastal control as they move in.

#16  1,4 tons (less than an early war Spitfire) and 20,000 HP ie about 8 times the horse power of an F4U Corsair, that thing must be able to fly!. I want one!

#15  Google Earth gives a really hi-def view of Anzali. Nowhere to go except the Stans and Russia though.

#14  Damn , I would die for an edit function on this site Fred .

The "Mowj" is a scaled down Vosper Mk5 'Alvand' frigate design copy, with all ASW weapons/sensors deleted and Chinese C-801 missiles instead of the old Sistel Sea Killers, and LY60 SAM.

#13  Yeh , maybe its a fishing trawler :p

#12  ..This sucker really is small - a Perry class missile frigate is 4100 tons, and even one of the new Littoral Combat Ships (USS Independence , considered the smallest possible oceangoing warship hull)comes in at 2784 tons full load. At 1400 tons, that Iranian 'destroyer' comes in only 500 tons past a Flower class corvette from WWII.

I call vaporship here.

#11  Well Pappy , if they built it in the Straits then it would be stuck in port for years , making them the most ineffective navy of all time , considering 2 US carrier groups are loitering round there :P

Considering the Caspian sea is land locked , I LOL'd a little. So now they feel totally surrounded , and isolated . The squeeze is on .

May i make a pre-order of Sturgeon caviar please ? Im sick of eating popcorn

#10  The destroyer wieghs 1.4 tons

Must be an inflatable......

#9  30 knots is fast. They could only do this with Russian technology transfers. Pre-emption time is near.
Posted by: Sneaze   2007-02-23 02:58

#8  More likely it's the long awaited 1400-ton Mouj-class 'destroyer' (actually, a corvette). Likely everything on it will be purchased elsewhere.

It was supposed to be launched in March... of 2003.

#7  Mil Forum scuttlebutt is that China is selling its advamced destroyer designs - unconfirmed, UNTIL NOW???
Posted by: JosephMendiola   2007-02-23 00:47

#6  I think they mean 1400 tons. That would be about right for 20,000 hp to give 30 knots. Still a pretty puny destroyer though.

#5  I'm under the impression it takes several years to build a warship of any significant size?

#3  I think there may just be a teeny tiny error in this story: 20k HP into a 2800 pond hull should get you up into the Miss Budweiser speed range, and not some palty 30 kts.
Skeered? no. will just need to lead it a little more......
Posted by: USN, ret.   2007-02-23 00:32

#2  The destroyer weighs 1.4 tons

Sounds kind of puny. Maybe this really is a 'tin can'. Are they building destroyers or destroyees?
