Jihad recruiters stay in custody in Holland
2007-02-23
A Rotterdam court ruled on Wednesday that the terrorist suspects in a new recruiting case must stay in jail for at least three more months, De Volkskrant writes. The attorneys’ appeal to transfer the detainees from the special penitentiary for terrorists in Vught to a more humane institution was dismissed. According to the court, the terrorist wing at the prison is not “barbarian and inhumane” but “strict and restrictive”. The attorneys have claimed that their clients were subject to a rigid and unhealthy regime. The public prosecutor said he could do nothing about the prison conditions since the ministry of justice has determined that persons with a terrorist background must be kept in the special wing at Vught.
"So sorry. The decision is out of my hands."
All the defence lawyers said that the prosecution had little evidence against their clients. The suspects in the case are five men and a woman who were arrested in Amsterdam and The Hague in November. Two of the detainees are Moroccans, one is Turkish, one is Tunisian and two are Dutch nationals of immigrant background. The men are being kept at the prison in Vught, the woman in the De Schie prison in Rotterdam.
Away from all the other prisoners, if you're smart.
