Ukrainian parties form opposition bloc |
2007-02-26 |
(Xinhua) -- Ukrainian opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko and head of Our Ukraine, Viktor Baloga, signed an agreement on Saturday to form an opposition alliance in parliament. The agreement is a strategic document which outlines principles for the two parties when they are in opposition or when they become parliamentary majority in the future, said Tymoshenko, quoted by Ukrainian National Information Agency. The agreement also laid out rules for joint action by the two parties in parliament. Under the agreement, a 12-member coordination committee will be formed as the leadership of the opposition bloc, said Tymoshenko. Five main parties, including President Viktor Yushchenko's Our Ukraine, Tymoshenko's bloc, the Socialist Party, the Party of Regions and its ally the Communist Party, were elected into parliament in March 2006. The Party of Regions, the Communist Party and the Socialist Party formed a parliamentary majority in July last year, when Tymoshenko announced her party would form the opposition. Our Ukraine joined the opposition in November 2006. |
