Film's View of Islam Stirs Anger on Campuses
2007-02-27
When “Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West,” a documentary that shows Muslims urging attacks on the United States and Europe, was screened recently at the University of California, Los Angeles, it drew an audience of more than 300 — and also dozens of protesters.

At Pace University in New York, administrators pressured the Jewish student organization Hillel to cancel a showing in November, arguing it could spur hate crimes against Muslim students. A Jewish group at the State University of New York at Stony Brook also canceled the film last semester.

The documentary has become the latest flashpoint in the bitter campus debate over the Middle East, not just because of its clips from Arab television rarely shown in the West, including scenes of suicide bombers being recruited and inducted, but also because of its pro-Israel distribution network.

The documentaryÂ’s proponents say it provides an unvarnished look at Islamic militancy.
When a Middle East discussion group organized a showing at New York University recently, it found that the distributors of “Obsession” were requiring those in attendance to register at IsraelActivism.com, and that digital pictures of the events be sent to Hasbara Fellowships, a group set up to counter anti-Israel sentiment on college campuses. “If people have to give their names over to Hasbara Fellowships at the door, that doesn’t have the effect of stimulating open dialogue,” said Jordan J. Dunn, president of the Middle East Dialogue Group of New York University, which mixes Jews and Muslims. “Rather, it intimidates people and stifles dissent.”

#19  Correct, OP. Before we can kill them all, however, we will need to convert all of the Kurds and many others who are with us in this. We need to find some way to get them to spit on the pedophile god and his comic book of blood and death. So, naturally, we have to get serious soon.

#18  I've read the Koran, and I've had contact with Muslims. Their "religion" is an extremist satanic death cult, and needs to be eliminated. Anything else is whistling past the graveyard, whether it's done by the "left" or the "right". It's not that we can't adjust, but that THEY can't change. It's not allowed by their death cult.

#17  I bought my copy off of Obsession's website.
I don't remember the url. I just did a search for "Obsession the movie".

#15  The left thinks they are special; that if muslims just knew them they would love them. WRONG. Wake up! The threat is here; it is now. The left, some members of Congress, and the main stream media need to quit apologizing for the actions of barbarians; they need to quit hating America. They need to quit providing comfort to the enemy. WE ARE AT WAR. THE RADICAL MUSLIMS DECLARED WAR ON US. They would kill you, your children, your mother, your grandmother, your dog, and your cat in a heart beat. Quit sticking your heads in the sand and ignoring the problem. It won't just go away if it is ignored. What the hell part of 911, etc., etc, etc. don't you understand?

Letd's try two variations "a movie abourt lynchings of Negros was cancelled arguing it could spur hate crimes agasint KKK students"

"a movie about exterminatioon camps was cancelled arguin it could spur hate crimes against Nazio students".

People can do nothing about their race but I see no reason an murderous ideology should get special treatment from other other murderous ideologies just because it is a religion.

And unlike your race you can change your idelogy so don't whean about hate crimes.

#13  Â“The question is how to break down the stereotypes facing the two religions.”

Perhaps, look for ways that will allow one side to stop the cradle to grave indoctrination of hate that promotes the notion that indiscriminate killing is a legitimate vehicle for change. On the flip side, find ways to have discussions that donÂ’t ultimately result in arrogant speculations of motivation.
Just a suggestion.

#12  The idea that it's the rest of us who had to be protected from hate crimes perpetuated by Muslims doesn't seem to percolate into some minds. Of course, there are all these hefty Saudi donations to US universities.

#11  Hey! They're using our own words against us!
They can't do that!

#10  Robert Fisk was being beaten by children in the streets and yet he blamed himself, i.e. us. He would continue to blame himself/us even as he slipped into the void. Not that I would toasted made popcorn approved of that turn of events had it transpired.

#9  In an all-too-familiar pattern, I've yet to hear of any films being made to explain what the 'true' religion *does* espouse. For all the bitching from folks who don't want to be lumped in with radical murderers, none have done anything to dispel the misconceptions. What the fuck DO these people believe and what IS their rationale for dismissing the many quotes in the Koran that unambiguously justify killing innocent people?

I, for one, really would like to be convinced that a few bad apples are spoiling the bunch. And I believe we should all fight the urge to jump to conclusions about Islam until we have educated ourselves on all its tenets. For the majority of us, that's no easy feat - until the mythical 'moderate' Muslims stand up and tell us what THEY believe, the rest of us will educate ourselves the only way we know how: watching the news, which we all know favors the bad over the good any day.

Americans aren't the only ones losing the PR battle in the WOT. Moderate muslims are, too.

Yeah, because the Jooos, Hindus, Mormons, Baptists, Amish, Agnostics, Atheists, Buddhists, Jainists, Taoists, and heck, even David Koresh's crowd are SOOOOOOO prone to "suicide" bombers, propaganda, brainwashing 3 year olds into Zionist-Crusader hatred, etc. Jeebus, they'll (the LLL in charge of Education) will really flip a lid when the shooting starts here at home won't they?

#7  Dan I have to disagree. Islam was founded in this kind of violence. Personally I think the communication ability gained by the web have allowed this pure form of Islam to spread like wildfire.

I strongly suggest Burgers take 10 minutes and watch this abrided version of the movie.

#6  "They can't even begin to conceive that people can be that barbaric for religious reasons"

Ahem...

They can if the object of their hate is evil "Christers."

#5  mhw -

They can't even begin to conceive that people can be that barbaric for religious reasons. Cognitive Dissonance (a psychological theory) can explain why. They need to conclude something else -- other than the unbelievabe horror that a religion can elicit -- that fits. And they do. Hence, they ascribe the violence to the "poor, downtrodden, desperate" state of the muslims who are "oppressed" by the west and jooooos.

When the palis were the only suicide bombers out there, it was plain to see (for them) that jooos were miserable creatures. After 9/11, they had to extend that notion to the entire western world, otherwise they'd have to reevaluate every notion, every belief they had.

What's ironic is that it's simple Psych 101. Any college student who took the class would recognize it. They can't right now, though. They're too busy seething.

#4  Mhw - these types will never wake to reality.
I've said it before and I'll say it again; the "blame America firster's" will beg forgiveness from the Islamutts even as they are having their throats cut.

#3  I've met many people who are still in the give-peace -a-chance Kumbaya phase even after 5 years of Islamic Terror. You have to wonder what it will take to wake these people from their slumber.

#2  Video clips or documentaries of Muslims urging attacks on the USA-Europe/West has already been shown on CNN's, MSNBC, FOX, and Big Three - ANTI-HATE CRIME PROTESTS ARE BIT LATE, AND BIT MOOT.

#1  The movie was so well crafted and emotion manipulating that I felt myself thinking poorly of some aspects of Islam

Must be some movie! I have not seen it and already I think poorly of most aspects of Islam.
