Al-Qaeda: U.S. warns Pakistan on aid cut?
2007-02-27
United States Vice-President Dick Cheney made an unannounced visit here for a few hours for talks with President Pervez Musharraf on Monday. The Pakistani Foreign Ministry said the talks covered "our bilateral relations, Afghanistan, and counter-terrorism co-operation". The spokesperson said she had no other details about the talks.

The New York Times reported from Washington hours after the visit that Mr. Cheney delivered an "unusually tough message" to Gen. Musharraf, with the warning that the new Democratic Congress would cut aid to Pakistan unless he showed results in hunting down the Al-Qaeda from suspected safe havens on the border with Afghanistan. A day earlier, the same newspaper reported that the White House had concluded that Gen. Musharraf was not living up to earlier commitments that Pakistan's peace agreements with tribal militants in North and South Waziristan were not at the cost of the military efforts against Al-Qaeda. U.S intelligence officials now assess that terrorist infrastructure in these tribal areas on Pakistan's north-west is being rebuilt, the newspaper reported.

A few hours after Mr. Cheney left here for Kabul, the Foreign Ministry said Pakistan had adopted a "comprehensive" approach to the problems in the tribal areas that covered "military action where necessary" and political and economic action, including development activities. Spokeswoman Tasnim Aslam denied Pakistan would take military action in those areas at the behest of Washington to pre-empt a Taliban spring offensive in southern Afghanistan, saying "Pakistan does not take dictation from anybody, any force".

Mr. Cheney's visit coincided with that of British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett, who praised Pakistan's contributions in the "war on terror", and said she had discussed ways of strengthening this co-operation in her talks with Gen. Musharraf and Foreign Minister Khurshid Kasuri. All countries involved in the war in Afghanistan needed to more to fight Talibanisation, Ms. Beckett said at a joint press conference with Mr. Kasuri.

#14  How about we overthrow Perv and then GWB installs Nancy as "interim" HMFDIC? That way she can not only run things but get up close and personal with those she thinks are "OK guys, just a little confused."

#13  Eliminate or destroy all the madrassahs, and destroy any mosque where the Imam preaches violence.

Error, kill the hate spewing Imams, The Mosque is just an empty building then.

#12  What does China get? A bigger more powerful India next door with one less Chinese client state next door. Forget about it till India and China finish their war.

#11  I've said it before - the solution to the Pakistan problem is to eliminate Pakistan. Divide it between Afghanistan (a reasonable Muslim state) and India along the Indus River. Eliminate or destroy all the madrassahs, and destroy any mosque where the Imam preaches violence.

Afghanistan will gain a couple of ports, lots of oil and natural gas, and the Pashtuns will be reunited. India gets the Punjab, most of Sindh, and Jammu/Kashmir. Muslims will become a minority among the Hindus in India. The ISI will be destroyed once and for all. Both Iran and Saudi Arabia lose several LARGE fortunes, and get set back to square one. The US gets a free hand at corraling and destroying both the Taliban and Al-Qaida. A huge group of forgers and counterfeiters get their necks stretched. More than a million fake passports become worthless overnight. Truly a win-win situation.

#10  Sharif and Bhutto (in exile in Saudi and the UAE) may be corrupt but the Corps Commanders of the Pakistani army are far more corrupt than they ever were. Lookup Fauji Foundation to understand.
There are former Pak leaders living in Rawalpindi who committed genocide. They actually killed 1-3 million people and got away with it.

Perv would just be replaced by another General and nothing would really change. It is the Pak army that runs Pakistan. It is a praetorian state.
The mullahs will never have power. They are simply a tool of the army.

The "apres moi, le deluge" threat has been used by every Pak leader since the very first PM in 1947.
Liqiat Ali Khan threatened India's Nehru with that. After him was supposed to be the bearded islamist rulers so Nehru should compromise.

#8  heh. Perv! Ya ol' pot. Some say chamber pot. Some say pot of gold. But I suspect ol' Pervy Boy stays in power because enough important people are familiar with the ol' saying, "out of the flame, into the frying pan".

#7  I don't know how much 'popularity' any democratic groups might have, but it wouldn't matter - they don't have the organization, arms or attitude (ruthlessness) to overcome the real power base, an alliance of Islamists and ISI.

Is there any chance of backing any of the democratic parties or are they too unpopular re previous corruption ????

#4  E.G. - overthrowing Musharraf would be counter-productive; there are no viable successors who would do a less bad job than he. He'll appease us with an AQ sacrifice from time to time because he needs our support (money) to keep himself in power. Without our support he would be overthrown by the Islamofascists in the ISI in a heartbeat.
