Suicide bomber targets Cheney during visit to Afghanistan
2007-02-27
A suicide bomber killed 19 people and wounded 11 outside the main U.S. military base in Afghanistan on Tuesday during a visit by Vice President Dick Cheney, officials said. The Taliban claimed responsibility and said Cheney was the target.

The blast happened near the first security gate outside the base at Bagram, killing 19 people, said Khoja Mohammad Qasim Sayedi, chief of the province's public health department. Gov. Abdul Jabar Taqwa said ''18 to 20 dead bodies'' lay on the ground after the blast.

Maj. William Mitchell said it did not appear the explosion was intended as a threat to the vice president. ''He wasn't near the site of the explosion,'' Mitchell said. ''He was safely within the base at the time of the explosion.''

However, a purported Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousef Ahmadi, said Cheney was the target of the attack. ''We knew that Dick Cheney would be staying inside the base,'' Ahmadi told The Associated Press by telephone. ''The attacker was trying to reach Cheney.''

#15  I suggest VP Cheney invite Mullah Omar on his next quail hunting trip.

#14  Doesn't sound like they were after Cheney at all, sounds like the target was the "Afgan Laborers" all along, it makes more sense, boom the hired help and cripple the base , now the Afgans will be much more reluctant to work for the EEvul 'Mercans.

#13  Sounds good to me, use their own tactics against them.

#10  If Cheney were gone, maybe that would persuade Lieberman to switch to the GOP thus shifting the balance in the Senate.

#8  Where was Pelosi when this happened? Has anyone seen her since? Was the PoS a skinny, nip/tuck, female in a Versace suit with a pearl necklace?

#7  He can appoint anyone he wants, but the appointment would have to be confirmed by both the Senate and the House (25th Amendment.)

I understood your point. My point was that the dynamic and mood of the American public would change. The Dems currently have barely even the illlusion of control. It is easy to get caught up in the spin and hype, but they haven't been able to do squat. The death of the VP would have a dramatic impact on the majority of the nomral, sane American people. It would provide Bush with more control, not less.

#4  "The blast happened near the first security gate outside the base at Bagram, killing 19 people..."

First security gate ... outside the base ... killing 19 people.

I sincerely hope that they're not counting the carcass that had explosives wrapped around its body in that 19.

There is *no way* this PoS could have got close enough to Cheney to have even mildly injured him. Therefore said PoS 'decided' (maybe remote control splodeydope?) to self-detonate and thereby end the lives of 19 human beings - and for f*in what? to make some kind of 'statement'?

Sickening.

#3  If they had killed the VP, Bush would have been able to appoint anyone he wanted, including his brother.

#1  Can you imagine the celebrations that would have erupted worldwide (and in the US) had they succeeded in killing Mr. Cheney.
And President Bush would not be able to appoint a VP to the right of Arlen Specter - what with the Senate confirmation as well as the next successor in the hands of the Democrats.
