Two commandos killed in Lanka roadside bomb |
2007-03-12 |
A roadside bomb killed two special forces commandos in eastern Sri Lanka Sunday, the Defence Ministry said. The deaths came amid heightened fighting between the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and Sri Lanka’s military. “The LTTE terrorists detonated a Claymore mine targeting a STF (Special Task Force) foot patrol. Two STF officers were killed,” the ministry said in a statement posted on its Web site. The Tigers began fighting for a separate homeland in Sri Lanka’s north and northeast in 1983 for ethnic minority Tamils, citing decades of discrimination by the Sinhalese majority. |
