Amsterdam to unveil Theo Van Gogh statue |
2007-03-15 |
The Amsterdam city district of Oost/Watergraafsmeer will be allowed to unveil a statue commemorating murdered filmmaker Theo van Gogh on Sunday. The court threw out a request this morning from a local resident to ban the statue. The woman wanted to prevent the statue from being placed. A spokesperson for the Amsterdam court confirmed the decision this morning. The Amsterdam woman fears that the statue will lead to public disturbances. She also thinks that the city district did a poor job of informing local residents about the statue. The judge found that the woman was right on this point, but did not think this was grounds enough to prevent the placing of the statue. The artwork to commemorate Van Gogh, who was murdered on 2 November 2004, is entitled "De Schreeuw" (The Scream) and will be placed in the Oosterpark. It is the work of Jeroen Henneman. One side of the statue depicts a screaming face, the other shows a closed mouth. |

#7 Yes BigJim, I concur, it sounds tasteless yet oh so pointless.... and no reference to the religious evil that silenced him either - no memorial plaque commending free speech in the face of Islamist Fascism... no no no |

#6 How about a fully electrified statue? Euro 220 should keep the flies away. |

#4 Any ID on "the woman"? I can probably guess... One side of the statue depicts a screaming face, the other shows a closed mouth. I'd have left the knife sticking out of his chest in. Just as a little reminder... |

#2 One side of the statue depicts a screaming face, the other shows a closed mouth. Tasteless, yet pointless, a true art treasure. Maybe something a little less edgy wouldn't attract the appropriate attention. |
