The sign for that is that the animal should move when it is slaughtered. If it dies before the Zakah then it is considered to be Mawqooza (fatally beaten) and is rejected. Electrical stunning is not permitted for poultry. 3/3 The requirements of the method of slaughter (Al Zakah). 3/3/1 Mention of the name of Allah when slaughtering (Bismillah). 3/3/2 That the slaughter (Zakah) of the animal be carried out in one of the Islamic Law (Shari’a) ways mentioned in Section 2/1. 3/3/3 The animal is slaughtered by cutting the trachea, the esophagus and the jugular veins from the front, from the side of the chest, not on the side of the back of the neck or the back. 3/3/4 The neck of the animal must not be cut or broken or any other similar action undertaken, until the bleeding has stopped. [emphasis added] Save from shock, I don't see how the animal loses consciousness quickly enough not to feel significant pain. |

#9 Zenster, I believe that in theory the halal slaughtering method and the kosher slaughtering method are similar: slicing the throat of the animal with a sharp knife, and letting the animal bleed out. The differences being that the kosher slaughterer's knife must be (if I recall correctly) sharp enough to slice a hair, the cut deep enough that the animal is functionally dead as soon as the cut is made, and the killing floor must be immaculately clean. But if you endeavor to stop halal slaughtering on the grounds of cruelty to animals, you will stop kosher slaughtering as well. Better to demand actual enforcement of federal cleanliness and hygiene laws that have been on the books since the 1930s.... unless you're arguing with your local PETA types, of course, then go with what works for the idiots. ;-) |

#8 PETA needs to STFU until they start addressing a much more significant ongoing large-scale practice involving inhumane and cruel treatment of animals. Otherwise known as halal slaughter. Until PETA takes substantive action against something that violates all of this nation's animal processing norms, their ostensible moral authority is null and void. |
