(Itar-Tass) -- Major Dmitry Ostroverkhov, an officer of the Baltic Fleet, has rescued a private, shielding him with his own body as a grenade exploded during a drill. The incident occurred at the Pervomaisky Training Center during a hand grenade handling drill, press service chief of the Baltic Fleet Yuri Kuroyedov told Tass on Wednesday. The officer heard a characteristic sound, indicating an early start of the detonator, when the private was in a trench. The officer reacted instantaneously: he forced the private out of the trench and shielded him with his body.
The officer received fragmentation wounds of medium seriousness as the grenade exploded in the well-protected trench. The wounded officer was hospitalized. There is no threat to his life. The private has survived the accident unhurt. Acting Baltic Fleet Commander Vice-Admiral Vasily Apanovich and Chairman of the Kaliningrad regional Duma Sergei Bulychev visited the wounded officer at his hospital bed. They highly praised the officer's conduct, saying, "It was an act of courage worthy of a Russian officer." |
