Somalia: Government asks for clan support
2007-04-30
(SomaliNet) Somalia’s interior minister Mohamed Mohamud Guled ‘Gamo-dhere’ said Sunday the national reconciliation conference is open for all Somalis including clan leaders, religious men and civil society groups – as the security forces deployed in key streets of the capital search for arms.

He said that he is particularly asking for Hawiye leaders to avoid inciting violence in the country. “I encourage for all clan leaders to join the peace process and attend the conference to heal all rifts among us.”
Mr. Gamo-dhere who is now in Kismayu, the southern port city in lower Juba region in Somalia, told the local media that his government is welcoming all parts to attend the coming national conference which is due to be held in mid June. “I call for all opposition members to give up the negative position and work with the government to establish peace and stability in the country,” said Gamo-dhere. He said that he is particularly asking for Hawiye leaders to avoid inciting violence in the country. “I encourage for all clan leaders to join the peace process and attend the conference to heal all rifts among us.”

Earlier, the transitional federal government in Somalia accused Hawiye leaders of supporting the remnants of the ousted Islamic Courts, which the government and western countries believe has ties with Al-Qaeda network.

Meanwhile, Mogadishu remains calm for the third day as people began to return to their houses after two weeks of heavy clashes which killed 1,500 people mostly civilians and wounded thousands more according to reports.
