'Taliban won't be invited to Pak-Afghan jirga' |
2007-06-02 |
The Afghan Peace Jirga Commission (APJC) has ruled out the possibility of inviting any Taliban supporters to the Pak-Afghan peace jirga scheduled for the first week of August in Kabul. “Those who have influence with the Taliban or militants will not be invited to participate in the jirga meeting due to security reasons,” Pir Syed Ahmad Gillani, head of the APJC, told a press conference in Nathiagali on Friday. Gillani said the Taliban were a constant threat to peace in Afghanistan and reiterated the Afghan government’s firm stance to stay away from them by not inviting them to the meeting. A 12-member APJC delegation arrived here on Thursday to finalise strategy for the joint Pakistan and Afghanistan grand jirga meeting, which would be attended by 700 delegates from both countries (350 members from each country). |
