The government has decided not to include "book" as symbol of political parties in the upcoming elections, sources told Daily Times on Tuesday. "Book" was previously allotted to the Mutahidda Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) as an election symbol. The sources said the government had decided to cancel all those election symbols that reflected extremism or religious emotions. A ruling party parliamentarian told Daily Times that the announcement for cancellation of such symbols would likely be made after finalization of the election schedule so that religio-political controversy was ended. He said the MMA had exploited the symbol of "book" to bag votes in the NWFP because of its resemblance to Holy Quran.
