Sarkozy, in Algeria, calls French colonialism 'profoundly unjust'
2007-12-04
The French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, said Monday that France's colonial system was "profoundly unjust," in a step toward ending decades of rancor between France and Algeria, once the crown jewel among French colonies. "Yes, the colonial system was profoundly unjust, contrary to the three founding words of our republic: liberty, equality, fraternity," he said at the start of a three-day state visit to Algeria.

The visit comes with tensions running high. France has refused for years to apologize for brutality during the colonial era. And an Algerian government minister said that Sarkozy won the presidential elections last spring because he was backed by a "Jewish lobby." Sarkozy responded Monday with an appeal for both France and Algeria to fight "all forms of racism."

"There is nothing that more closely resembles anti-Semitism than Islamophobia," he said. "Both have the same face: that of stupidness and hate."

#10  They are French citizens, yes, so, to return them to their ancestors' homeland, we would need to deprive them of the French citizenship. And this is only possible for people who weren't born on French soil, and who pose a serious threat to the country. Alas, the vast majority of those French-Algerians were born on French soil.

#9  Lemme think here. Most of those rioters are "of african background," but are actually French citizens, right? Could the easy visas be for _their_ benefit, to facilitate return to the ancestral home?

#8  So, easier entries for Algerian islamists and antisemites and anti-French extremists...

Great...

As if we didn't have already enough problems in our suburbs, with all those young Algerian-French burning cars and trying to kill policemen...

#7  This right after one algerian minister vented about the supposed jewishness (horror! A jooooooooo! Btw, historically, before the french colonization jews from proto-algeria had a terrible, terrible non-status, officially set between the dog and the pig, no, really) of sarko, and his subservience to the Zionists™... but, after all, algerian pols keep insulting France, blaming her for all their woes, saying that we have a terrible debt,... and in return, they've got France whoring itself to try to keep her influence against the growing Us and chinese shadow.
Oh, and Sarko said algeria and France were gonna "reciprocate" on visa, which basically means easier entry for algerians on french territory.

#6  Yes, JFM, France conquered Algeria in the XIXth century because the North African Arabs were constantly attacking French, Spanish and Italian coasts and ships.

In fact, according to the best historians, from XIth century to XIX century, more than 2 millions (yes, 2,000,000) European white people have been captured and enslaved by the Arabs (working for the kingdom of Alger).

So, France has to insist officially on Algeria to apologize for its brutal enslavement of 2 million Europeans.

#5  This propaganda about anti-Semitism resembling Islamophobia is spread world wide by the islamonazis.

I am disgusted to see that Sarkozy is now repeating islamonazi propaganda.

#4  I am French, and I voted for Sarkozy last May, and I am outraged by his declaration.

Antisemitism is racism: hate directed against people because of what they are.

Islamophobia is not racism: it is hate directed against people who willingly have chosen an ideology (and islam is one of the worst ideology of all human history).

Sarkozy acted like a coward.

I am disgusted.

#3  Small problem: the Algeian president has not said the same about Algerian piratry who in fact was the main reason for French invasion.

And what does he call Arab colonialism in France?
