4 shot outside Colorado Springs church
2007-12-10
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A gunman opened fire in the parking lot of a Colorado Springs church on Sunday, striking four people, the church's pastor said. The conditions of the people shot outside the New Life Church were not known, El Paso County Sheriff's Lt. Lari Sevene said.

Lance Coles, a pastor at New Life Church, told The Associated Press he received a report that a man was shooting at people in the church parking lot and that the gunman may have entered the church.

It was not immediately known whether the shootings were related to an earlier shooting about 70 miles away in the Denver suburb of Arvada. There, two people died and two were wounded early Sunday when a gunman opened fire in a dormitory at a missionary training center on the campus of Faith Bible Chapel.

#15  Just saw the security guard's press conference -- she is deeply religious, and spoke about God being w/her through the ordeal (when she dropped the perp like the sack o' shite he so clearly was) -- you could almost here the press types squirming while she spoke eloquently and thoughtfully about her faith.

#9  When are they going to start calling this a hate crime? Never mind.

#8  Confirmed: the dead shooter is 21 year old Matthew Murray, son of a prominent neurologist.

I was actually hoping I was wrong about the shooter. Being able to ID him so early from far-off Texas is really kind of spooky. It makes me wonder what a real 'net sleuth could find out about me or anyone else.

#7  The media initially gave the exact address where the search warrant was executed this morning, then changed it to the block number. I was able to find it in a google search and eventually determine that the home is owned by a prominent area physician. The physician has a 21 year old son.
I won't post the names until there is official confirmation. The family has no radical connections that I could find, but that is scarcely conclusive.

#6  Also unconfirmed reports he had explosives in his vest as well as planted around the campus. The New Life Church also had a Youth with a Mission office on site, connecting them.

#5  They released the victims names.

A father was seriously wounded and his two teenage daughters were killed. Very sad. Good thing they had armed security guards waiting for the shooter as he came inside the building.

And yes, it was a female volunteer security guard that took the slimeball down. There are still unconfirmed reports he had a bulletproof vest on, so that was a good shot if true.

#4  The man shot five people before an armed security officer confronted him.

She shot and killed the gunman and probably, in the estimation of Chief Myers, "saved many lives today."

She??? Impressive.

#3  This is why no area should be a "Gun Free" zone. Shooter was popped as he entered the church. Good on the security guard for doing what had to be done.

#2  Sad, but it could have been worse - glad this security guard was a good shot (and willing to shoot.) It will be interesting to see if there is a connection with the Arvada shooter (could even be the same guy?) Both were presumably violently anti-Christian, and Liberals tend to use the courts rather than guns, so who could possibly be behind it? What ideology might motivate a young man to shoot up a bunch of peaceful practicing Christians?

#1  UPDATE: 2nd Victim Dies in New Life Church Shooting A second person victim has died after a shooting at New Life Church on Sunday. The unidentified person died shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday night.
During a late-night conference on Sunday, Colorado Springs Police Chief Richard Myers told reporters a female security guard shot and killed the suspect, after he had already shot 5 New Life members, killing two. One of the victims died shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday night. The other remains in fair condition.
