#4 It's the old wheels-within-wheels routine. Kenya has had a sizeable muslim population for centuries. Based on experience, they've never been friendly to Americans (neither are most Kenyans), but strip away the usual NYT-template and the ex-Newsweek journalist's agenda, and somebody's obviously got them really whacked up and paranoid. Take your pick of the usual suspects - Saudi Wahabbis, Yemenis, Somalis, etc. But in a way, the low-level paranoia and confusion seems almost Cold-War like. |

#3 Real democracy in Kenya means candidates position themselves as either pro-US and non-genuine anti-fundamentalist, or genuine fundamentalist Muslim, ie Islamist (probably supported by Saudi Arabian money, too, but I didn't read that far -- perhaps there's a surprise in the final paragraph, but someone else will have to look for it). I hope that helps, Icerigger. |
