Gemayel: Those opposing the vote are against interest of Christians |
2007-12-27 |
Former Lebanese president and Phalange Party leader Amine Gemayel, urged the Leaders of the pro-Syrian opposition to focus on Lebanon away from foreign allegiances. He asked, "What prevents the election of Gen. Michel Suleiman , who enjoys the unanimous support of the majority and the opposition?" Gemayel said he is against amending the constitution , but supports it if it means the end of the presidential void .” It is the best choice between two evils” he said. Gemayel called for the election of the President of the Republic as soon as possible. He accused those who are delaying the election of acting against the interest of the Christians of Lebanon and of marginalizing the role of the Christians in the region. Hezbollah ally General Michel Aoun, a Christian leader , is being blamed by the parliament majority for the delay in the elections. Aoun has a list of conditions that he wants the majority to agree to before the election. The opposition called Aoun’s conditions, extortion and blackmail. “Aoun’s conditions are identical to those of Syria’s “, the majority claims |
