Long Lost State Dept. Weekly Report on Iraq |
2008-01-31 |
![]() The Washington Post reports that the U.S. program for granting Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs) to Iraqi translators has fallen short of demand. The program initially covered 50 individuals in 2006, 500 annually for 2007 and 2008, and is scheduled to drop back to 50 in FY 2009. As of September 2007, 429 Iraqi translators (and their families) have been admitted to the U.S. under the SIV program. About 7,000 Iraqi interpreters have worked for U.S. forces since 2003. An amendment proposed by Senator Kennedy to the 2008 defense authorization bill would raise the SIV cap to 5,000 over the next five years. Inflation is way down, oil production is up, electrical supply pretty steady, but demand continues to climb. |

#3 An amendment proposed by Senator Kennedy to the 2008 defense authorization bill would raise the SIV cap to 5,000 over the next five years. The more the better. Hopefully things will be good enough there that this cap won't be tested! |
