| Israel denies truce talks with Hamas |

| A senior Israeli defence ministry official on Thursday denied that Egypt was mediating truce talks between the Jewish state and Hamas. “It is false to say that there are negotiations under Egyptian mediation,” Amos Gilad, a political aide to Defence Minister Ehud Barak, told public radio. The comments came a day after moderate Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas said that Israel’s main ally Washington would get involved in “intense” efforts underway in Egypt to strike a ceasefire between Israelis and Palestinians. He said US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice - who paid a two-day visit to Egypt, Israel and the Palestinian territories this week - was involved in the efforts. |
